Alan Skinner
Director, Lean Six Sigma ProgramUTS Business School
During the early 1990's Alan was involved in DEC, COMPAQ, and HP in leadership roles to facilitate business excellence and improvement programs linked to strategy. Alan has chaired the Australian Business Excellence Framework Committee for the Australian Quality Council and has served as a senior evaluator for the Business Excellence Awards process.
He has been lecturing at the UTS Business School in an adjunct capacity for some 20 years delivering courses on Business Excellence and Lean Six Sigma. He is the Director of the Lean Six Sigma and Business Excellence Institute that delivers courses on Organisational Improvement (Lean Six Sigma methodology) through the Executive Programs of the UTS Business School.
Alan has accumulated a wealth of knowledge about success factors for Lean Six Sigma through his practical experience leading, observing and guiding numerous improvement projects over decades. He has completed research investigating the intricate web of dynamics project facilitators and sponsors navigate during projects (PhD from UTS on LSS). His work reveals the distinctly social-political character of the process of improvement surfacing a deeper social reality that is more comprehensive and representative of improvement at the project level.
Specific findings generated over time advance understanding of the significance of the facilitator, team and sponsor roles and the realities of improvement activities. Implications for the role of leadership, training and support structures for facilitators and the engagement of team members during improvement have been incorporated into the LSS teaching and coaching at UTS creating an effective and unique curriculum. Consequently, UTS Lean Six Sigma graduates have consistently delivered significant measurable outcomes for their organisations.
